TIDES is a collection of ten solo piano miniatures composed during the Melbourne 2020 lockdown. These pieces were my own therapeutic response to world events, and I enjoy playing them as a meditation. Previous albums have been more improvisational. TIDES is all notated, with just a few optional improvising sections. I wanted to sculpt something very particular and, in the workshopping phase, improvisation didn’t always yield the shape I was looking for. Also, in the absence of gigs, I take comfort that other piano playing folks can play these pieces themselves at home, seeing as they are all notated. In Australia now we have some live performance, but friends in other parts of the globe are still quite house bound. I hope they have fun playing these.
